A side-by-side review for nonprofits choosing between two donor management platforms. Honest, sourced, and updated quarterly.
DonorForge is a modern donor management platform for stewardship-minded small to mid-size nonprofits. Free tier with paid plans starting at an introductory rate. Built around recurring giving, pledges, multi-fund accounting, and the religious-org features (Hebcal-aware yahrzeits, tithe statements, alumni cohorts) that legacy CRMs charge extra for.
Long-established receipting and fund-accounting software for churches and small charities, now with a hosted DONATION Pro platform. Churches and small charities whose first need is compliant tax receipting, and who want a vendor to build and run their website for them. Two separate lines. Classic DONATION is free for up to 25 donors and starts around $17 per month beyond that. DONATION Pro, the hosted fundraising and website platform, is $150 per month, or $125 per month billed annually. Card processing on Pro is 4.9% plus $0.30; the company guarantees the effective rate stays at or under 1.5% per quarter, which depends on donors choosing to cover fees at checkout. ACCOUNTS, the fund-accounting product, is licensed separately.
Free tier real enough to actually run a small org on.
Recurring giving with retry logic and donor self-managed cards.
Pledge tracking with bill-pay reminders and forgiveness rules.
Hebcal-aware (synagogues), alumni cohorts (schools), in-kind logging (food banks). Out of the box, not as add-ons.
Event seating with a real seating map and walk-up checkout.
Connect your own Stripe account: donations settle straight to your bank, DonorForge never holds the funds and adds no platform fee on top of Stripe's rate. Apple Pay and Google Pay come with it.
Optional donor-covers-fees at checkout, computed as a true gross-up so you receive the full gift rather than the gift minus the fee.
Volunteer management included: roster, shifts with capacity, attendance, and hour tracking.
Outstanding satisfaction and support reputation: 4.9 out of 5 across 245 Capterra reviews, with reviewers repeatedly describing same-day, personal help.
Genuinely free for very small organizations: the Classic tier covers up to 25 donors at no cost.
Receipting is the product's origin and it shows; CRA and IRS compliant charitable receipts are handled thoroughly.
ACCOUNTS is real double-entry fund accounting, not a reporting add-on. Few donor CRMs ship a true fund-accounting sibling.
DONATION Pro includes done-for-you website design, hosting, and ongoing updates plus concierge setup, which is a service most software vendors simply do not offer.
Long track record and a large installed base of churches and small charities across the US and Canada.

DONATION exports donors, gifts, and receipt history to CSV from both the desktop and web versions, and DonorForge imports them directly. Organizations typically move when receipting alone stops being enough and they want grant management, stronger reporting, and one product instead of three. Note that DonorForge does not resell websites; on Stripe you connect your own account and keep processing at Stripe's published nonprofit rates with no platform markup.
Software4Nonprofits (DONATION) is a real product, made by a real team, used by real organizations. Churches and small charities whose first need is compliant tax receipting, and who want a vendor to build and run their website for them. If that profile fits, you should evaluate it on its own terms.
DonorForge exists for a different shape of org: smaller or mid-size, want a modern UI, value a free tier they can run on, and want recurring giving and pledge tracking that work on the entry plan, not as upgrades. We are newer than the legacy CRMs, which means faster iteration and a smaller integrations library; the trade is real and we name it.
The honest version: if you are deciding by spreadsheet, the answer is whichever of these matches more rows in your spreadsheet, not the marketing page's.
